How is the qualification for the Premier12 determined?
Determination of Qualification
Method |
Description |
Top 12 National Teams |
The participating teams of Premier12 are composed of the top 12 national teams in the world rankings at the end of the year. This system aims to ensure that strong teams participate in the competition. |
Participation Requirements |
Only WBSC member countries can be counted in the world rankings. Non-member countries cannot earn points even if they participate in competitions. Therefore, countries must actively participate in WBSC-recognized competitions to improve their rankings. |
Encouraging Competition |
Through this ranking and qualification system, WBSC encourages countries to be more actively involved in international competitions to enhance their status and competitiveness in the global baseball scene. |
Calculation of World Rankings
Method |
Description |
Points System |
- WBSC uses a points system to calculate each country’s performance in different competitions, including World Cups, continental competitions, etc. - Each competition allocates corresponding points based on the ranking of the participating teams. The calculation of points is based on the results of the last four years and is updated annually. |
Points Source |
Points earned in various competitions are allocated based on the number of participating teams and final rankings. For example, if a competition has multiple teams ranked in the top 12, these teams will receive additional points rewards. |
Ranking Updates |
At the end of each year, WBSC announces the world rankings for that year, which serves as the basis for the qualification of the next Premier12. |
How is the qualification for the World Baseball Classic (WBC) determined?
Method |
Description |
World Rankings |
The participating teams of each WBC are mainly determined based on the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) world rankings. Usually, the top 16 national teams will automatically qualify. |
Qualification Matches |
For countries that do not directly qualify, WBSC will hold qualification matches. These qualification matches usually involve multiple national teams and adopt a knockout or round-robin format, ultimately determining the advancing teams. |
Invitation System |
In addition to rankings and qualification matches, WBSC can also invite other countries to participate based on specific circumstances, such as emerging baseball countries or teams with potential. |
Player Qualification |
Participating players must be citizens or permanent residents of that country and hold valid passports or relevant documentation. Additionally, players must meet specific age and health requirements. |
In 2026, the WBC will have 20 participating teams, including the top 16 from the 2023 WBC and 4 teams that advance through qualification matches.
How is the WBSC points system calculated?
WBSC allocates points based on the final rankings of each country in its recognized competitions, without considering the scores or win-loss records during the matches.
Points Calculation Method
The points that can be earned for each ranking are an arithmetic series. Assuming the total number of participating teams is N
, the highest points for the event is H
, and the lowest points is L
, the formula for the points that can be earned for ranking n is:
$$
\text{Points earned for ranking n} = H - \left(\frac{H - L}{N - 1} \times (n - 1)\right)
$$
Weighting Factor: Different competitions have different weighting factors, which depend on the ranking of the participating teams. For example, if a competition has multiple teams ranked in the top 12, the points for that competition will be correspondingly increased.
